How Long Does a Money Transfer Take? The 6 Factors That Decide

18 August 2026
The most common question about transfers is one sentence long: “When will it arrive?” The answer is not, because several factors decide the timing. The points below bring your expectations closer to reality.
1. Delivery method
With cash pickup the money is in hand the moment the recipient reaches the point and shows their ID — the timing depends on when they go. For transfers to an account or card the recipient’s bank is involved, and its working hours and internal processes affect the timing.
2. Domestic or international?
Domestic transfers usually complete the same day. International transfers involve the destination country’s rules, the intermediary’s processes and currency conversion, so they can take longer.
3. Time of day and working days
Transactions started near closing time or at weekends and on public holidays may be credited on the next working day. Cash pickup is more flexible: as long as the service point is open, the transaction goes through.
4. Accuracy of the details
A small error in the name, account number or country puts the transaction on hold until it is corrected. This is one of the biggest causes of delay; checking the details once more before you confirm is the fastest fix.
5. Security and regulatory checks
Payment institutions run additional checks on some transactions under anti-money-laundering rules. This step protects the transaction and, rarely, can extend the timing.
6. Amount and frequency
High-value or unusually frequent transactions may go through extra checks. This protects both the sender and the recipient.
How do you track your transfer?
Every transaction produces a reference (transaction number). That number and the sender’s details are enough to track it:
- Check the status through the channel you used (app, internet branch or service point).
- Give the transaction number to the recipient: for cash pickup they present it at the point.
- Keep your receipt: it is the first document you will be asked for in any enquiry.
If it is taking longer than expected
- First check the details: are the name and the account/card information correct?
- Check public holidays and bank working hours in the recipient’s country.
- Contact the channel you used with the transaction number: customer services can see which stage it is at.
With PTN, Faturamatik’s money transfer brand, you can send from points in 81 provinces at home and through a wide network in 195 countries abroad. The fee and the amount the recipient will receive are shared before the transaction, and the number given afterwards is used for tracking.
